Catherine C. McCauley Memorial Scholarship

Catherine C. McCauley touched many lives by giving of her self while teaching for over 60 years.  Wishing to tribute to Catherine's memory and devotion to teaching, her family established an annual scholarship in her name shortly after her death last fall at the age of 95.

Catherine began her teaching career in rural Cerro Gordo County in 1928.  She taught in Kellogg, Hampton, Marshalltown and Rockwell before moving to Mason City in 1948.

Catherine married Joseph McCauley in 1948 and began teaching in Mason City until she retired from the Mason City School District in 1975.  She continued to teach part time and assisting special needs students until 1998.

Over her many years of teaching and being actively involved in her community, Catherine received many community and service honors including Rotary Club's Service Above Self Award, Mercy Hospital's Silver Distinction Award for Excellence in Education, Mason City Education Association's Friend of Education Award, KIMT's Golden Apple Award, Council on Geographic Education's Distinction in Teaching Award, and Outstanding Teaching Recognition from both Kellogg and Hampton School Districts.

Her two children, Bernard and Sheila and their families will deeply miss Catherine, but hope the memorial scholarship will exemplify her dedication to her students.  The scholarship is being awarded to qualifying MCHS graduates who major in education and show financial need.
