Questions 6th Grade Students Would Like to Know But Were Afraid to Ask

 

  • Back Packs
    • Backpacks are not allowed in the classrooms.  Students must leave backpacks in their lockers.

 

  • Busing
    • Where does the bus pick us up?
      • Parents and students will be notified by the Transportation Director of the students pick up and delivery location.
      • The bus will pick you up from an assigned bus stop.

 

  • First Day of School Schedule
    • The 6th grade teachers have a fun and exciting schedule planned for all of you, which will be given to you on the first day of school.

 

  • New Principal
    • Mr. Jumper is the new Principal at JAMS.

 

  • Late for Class
    • Students will be given 3 free late passes to class.  After a student uses up the 3 free passes, the student will stay after school for detention.

 

  • Homework
    • Students should expect to have about 1 hour of homework each day.  If a student uses their study hall wisely at the end of the day, they should be able to complete most if not all of the homework before the end of the day.

 

  • Before School
    • What time can we arrive at JAMS?
      • Any time.  Students will NOT be supervised until 7:45 a.m.

 

    • Breakfast – Served Daily at 7:50 – 8:00 a.m.
      • What types of food do they serve?
        • Great food – The menu changes daily.

 

    • Putting money in lunch account?
      • Students can place money in their lunch account from 7:50 – 8:00 a.m. in the foyer by the cafeteria.

 

    • Where do we order the Chef Salads?
      • Students order a chef salad from 7:50 – 8:00 a.m. in the foyer by the cafeteria.

      • Chorus meets 2 days out of the 6 day cycle

 

    • Intramurals
      • Intramurals are held 1 day out of the 6 day cycle

 

    • Study Hall
      • Study hall is a great time to get homework completed and ask teachers questions for clarification.

 

  • Lockers
    • What if someone gets our locker combination?
      • Each student will be assigned a locker.  Do not give out your locker combination to anyone.
    • Is opening the lock hard?
      • Practice – Use a paddle lock for practice
    • Is it true we can decorate lockers on birthdays?
      • Yes – Just the metal part of the lockers

 

  • Drop off/ Pick up procedures
    • Drop off
      • Students should be dropped of at JAMS in the front of the building.  Supervision of students will not be in place until 7:45 a.m.
    • Pick up
      • Students should be picked up at JAMS in the front of building from 3:18 – 3:30 p.m.
      • Please do not double park in the faculty parking lot.

 

  • Lunch Program
    • Adding money to your account
      • Student can place money in their account at the cafeteria at 7:50 – 8:00 a.m.
    • Breakfast
      • Breakfast is at 7:50 – 8:00 a.m.
    • Lunch
      • Extra’s
        • Alacarte is available for students who have money in their account and who have a lunch ticket.
      • Outside
        • On occasion we will go out side for the last 5 minutes of lunch.

 

  • Power School
    • Parents will be able to take a training course to be able to see their students grades on line.
    • Training course will be available at back to school night or through Mr. Johnson.

 

  • PTO
    • JAMS PTO will meet in October, January, and April starting at 7:00 p.m.

    • A list of materials will be posted on the Mason City Community School District web site or at local retail stores.

 

  • Dogs
    • John Adams has 2 certified therapy dogs that come to school throughout the year.  Jams is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Drake is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  Research shows that there are many healthy and educational benefits to have a pet around.  Mrs. Hutchens and her dogs welcome you to stop by for a visit.

 

  • Athletics
    • Interscholastic Athletics will be offered for 7th and 8th grade students.
    • 6th grade students can participate in intramural activities.

 

  • Intramurals
    • Intramural activities are available during 8th period 1 day out of the 6 day cycle.
    • Activities range from swimming to walking

 

 

  • Computers
    • Computers are available to students and parents in the IC from 3:30 – 4:00 p.m.

 

  • Stairwells
    • Each stairwell is assigned to a different grade level.  This eliminates any unnecessary contact with older students. 

 

  • Fundraising
    • Kick off for the JAMS Fundraiser is September 7th – September 19th.
    • The fundraiser is a magazine sale.
    • Target -  Use charge card and getting 10%

 

  • Lunch
    • How long is lunch?  - 25 minutes
    • Do we get extras?  -  You have the choice of 2 main entrees and alacarte.

 

  • Planners
    • Do you have hall passes? 
      • They are located in you planners
    • Do you have to bring your planner everywhere?
      • YES!

 

  • Lockers
    • Do they change the combinations?
      • The combinations of the lockers are changed every year.
    • What if we can’t get our locker open?
      • Ask a staff member for help.

 

  • Discipline
    • What are Time-Outs?
      • Time out is a room where teachers send students who need time to refocus and reflect about the choices they are making.

 

    • What is a Contact Slip?
      • A contact slip is a reminder for a student to come in after school for assistance or a consequence for making a poor choice.

 

    • Do parents have to sign contact slips?
      • Yes

 

    • What is an Office Referral?
      • An office referral is a detention notice given to a student who has made a poor choice. 
      • Mr. Johnson will talk to all students who are given an office referral and he will determine the consequences for the actions.

 

  • Physical Education
    • Is PE hard?
      • Not really – do your best

 

    • Do we have to run a lot during PE?
      • No, but there is a running portion of the PE curriculum.

 

    • Do you have to change out?
      • It is an expectation to change in PE.

 

    • Do you have to take a shower?
      • No.  Students can take a shower if the chose to shower, but are not required.
