Dear Parents/Guardians:

Summer is a time to start preparing for the next school year and the arrival of your child to our building.  The new building is slowly starting to take shape and hopefully it will be ready in early August.  Mr. Ellingson has taken a middle school principal and curriculum director job in another district so time has been spent hiring a replacement.  Jason Wedgbury will be the new associate principal and he is busy selling his house and moving to Mason City.  Registration is the start of this process and the necessary forms for the 2006-2007 school year are enclosed.  Registration dates are:

Thursday, August 10, 2006 from Noon to 7:00 PM

Friday, August 11, 2006 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Please complete the following forms prior to coming to registration so that the process will remain streamlined and will require little waiting on your part.  The following needs to be filled in and returned during the registration time:

  • Student Information sheet:  All blanks on both sides need to be completed.
  • Authorization sheet:  All blanks need to be completed on this sheet as well.
  • Parent Group sheet:  This will be used by the parent group to compile the student directory and also to find volunteers to help with their projects.
  • Packet of several sheets stapled together needs to be completed if you are applying for free and reduced fees for books, lunch, and/or busing.  Only one packet per family for all students in the district needs to be completed.

Physical forms were mailed to incoming 7th and 8th grade students with their report cards at the end of the school year.  These should be returned totally completed at registration time.   This will allow your student to attend the first practice when school starts.  Sixth grade students do not need to have a physical to enter middle school.

Student fundraisers:

  • Students will have the opportunity to be involved in our annual fundraising project during September.  We sell magazines and encourage families to wait to renew subscriptions until then.  The school gets 35% of each renewal or new subscription.  If you have a special deal for a magazine, that price will be honored by the company if you include your form or renewal notice.  If students can start reminding friends and relatives, then our fundraiser is a successful adventure for us and allows us to purchase books, technology, and equipment for the students that we would not be able to do otherwise.
  • Boxtops for Education are also collected and used by the Student Council for their projects.

Attendance Policy:   Each quarter students will be considered truant if they miss more than seven days, which is 56 class periods.  The school day will still be composed of eight periods, so when a student has missed eight periods that will count as one day even though it may be part of several different days.  The notes from doctors, dentists, and other appointments will be even more important to turn in to excuse the time missed.  All four quarters will again be using the seven days even though the number of days in the quarters may vary.

Tardy Policy:  A reminder that students are expected to be at school on time.  The handbook distributed at registration contains more details.

Locker and Block Time Rooms:  On registration day, students will be able to practice their locker combination and find their block time room.  We have found that sixth graders’ anxiety level is reduced if they are confident about opening their locker and finding their room for the first day of school.

First Day of School:  For 6th graders and new 7th and 8th graders, the first day of school will be August 23, 2006.  For returning students in grades seven and eight, the first day of school will be August 24, 2006.

The Roosevelt Middle School Parent Group has worked hard the last few years to support school programs and activities that benefit students and keep parents involved.  Please support this group by attending meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, except December and May, at 7:00 PM in the RMS Instructional Center.

Sincerely,

Carol A. Clayton, Principal
